I plan to stop working next year at age 55. If I take early retirement, how soon can I start getting my Social Security benefits? If I don't work any more, will my Social Security benefits be affected?
The earliest age at which you can begin getting Social Security retirement benefits is 62. If you do not work any more after age 55, your benefits will probably be lower than the estimate shown on your automatic Statement. When Social Security prepared that Statement, they assumed you would continue to work at your current rate of earnings up to each of the retirement ages shown.
You can complete a request for a revised Statement here. On the application, enter age 55 as the age at which you plan to stop working and $0 as your estimated future earnings.
