In 1791 under a Buttonwood Tree in Manhattan, the beginning of the New York Stock Exchange started. Twenty-four brokers met under the infamous tree on Wall Street and established a trading group. They pledged to each other that they will not buy or sell for any person, any kind of public stock at less than 1/4 commission of the value. This exchange between them was referred to as "The Buttonwood Agreement."
