An "easement" is a limited legal right to use another person's real estate for a specific purpose. Examples of easements include the right to pass across the property, the right to construct and maintain a roadway across the property, the right to construct a pipeline under the land, or the right to put utility, sewage or power lines on a property. Easements can be temporary or permanent, and can be created pursuant to contract or by operation of law.
