A "buydown" is a term often used to describe a payment to a mortgage lender from the seller or buyer of real estate, or sometimes a third party such as a real estate broker, causing the lender to reduce the interest rate or monthly payments during the early years of a mortgage loan. The buydown is usually for the first one to three years of the mortgage loan. For example, home builders often offer buydowns to attract buyers of homes they are selling.
