An "analyst" typically refers to a professional employed by a securities brokerage firm or mutual fund who studies a number of companies in a particular industry and makes buy, sell or hold recommendations based on his or her analysis of the company, the industry, competitors, and the overall state of the economy. Some analysts have a considerable following and can affect the price of a company's stock when they issue a buy, sell, or hold recommendation.
