"Treasury stock method" refers to the method used to calculate diluted earnings per share when common stock equivalents, such as unexercised stock options, warrants, or convertible shares, exist. Diluted earnings per share give a more accurate reflection of a company's earnings. Generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP") require use of the treasury stock method for calculating diluted earnings per share.
