"Stock symbol" is a trading symbol given to a security. AMEX and NYSE stocks have three or less character symbols, such as IBM for IBM Corporation. Symbols with four letters, such as MSFT for Microsoft, are used for NASDAQ stocks. If a fifth letter is shown, it identifies the security as something other than a single issue of a common stock.
