A "risk score" is formula generated number that rank-orders consumers according to the likelihood that their credit obligations will be paid as expected. Risk scores are used by lenders to determine creditworthiness of potential borrowers. The most well known risk score technique was developed by Fair Isaac Corporation, and is referred to as a FICO score. The major credit reporting agencies use slightly different methods to calculate their risk scores.
