"Off balance sheet financing" refers to a form of financing which is structured so as to not require to show up on a company's balance sheet. Such transactions can be legitimate financing vehicles, or can be implemented to hide various negative aspects of a company's financial operations. Enron engaged in a variety of off balance sheet financings, which in part ultimately led to its downfall.
