A "high-deductible health plan" or "HDHP" is a health insurance plan with a relatively high deductible, typically at least a $1,000 deductible for individuals and $2,000 for families. High deductible plans have generally lower premiums than comparable plans with lower deductibles, since the policyholder (the insured) is responsible for more medical expenses before the insurance kicks in. Individuals who are enrolled in HDHPs may qualify for a health savings account (HSA).
