The "euro" is the common currency of many countries in the European Monetary Union (EMU). The national currencies of the participating countries were replaced with euro coins and bills on January 1, 2002. These countries include Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
