An "earnest money deposit" is the amount of money given by the buyer to a seller of an asset upon the signing of a contract for the purchase of the asset. For example, the buyer of a home at the time of signing the sales contract often makes a deposit of money to show good faith in going through with the purchase. The earnest money deposit is usually placed in escrow and used as part of the down payment.
