A "commercial letter of credit" is a letter usually issued by a bank that on behalf of a buyer that acts as a means of guaranteeing payment to a seller upon shipment of goods to the buyer. It acts in essence as a bank guarantee that payment will be made. Such letters are often used in international sales transactions where goods are being shipped long distances.
