A "Business Development Company" or a "BDC" is a company that is created to help finance companies in their early stages of development. BDCs are similar to venture capital funds. Many BDCs are set up much like closed-end investment funds and are public companies that trade on the NYSE, the American Stock Exchange, foreign exchanges, or NASDAQ. BDCs allow smaller investors to participate and benefit from investing in emerging growth start ups.
