An "automatic stay" is a law that goes into effect immediately upon filing a bankruptcy petition. The law forces creditors to stop all collection actions against the debtor, such as foreclosures, garnishments, and evictions, and gives the debtor time to sort things out and come up with a reorganization plan. The automatic stay protects the debtor from creditors seeking to seize its assets.
