When I first applied for a Social Security card, I was issued a Social Security card that says, "Not Valid for Employment." I now have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Will I be issued a different Social Security number, or will I have to apply to adjust my current Social Security number?
If your work eligibility has changed or if have become a U.S. citizen, you must apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will no longer read "Not Valid for Employment," but you will retain the same Social Security number.
All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Social Security cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.
Social Security will mail your number and card as soon as they have all of your information and have verified your documents.
