What happens if I suffer a disability, divorce, or catastrophic illness during the Social Security Administrative Wage Garnishment process?
You may, at any time during the AWG process, ask Social Security to review whether the amount being deducted from your pay should be reduced based on a material change in your situation, which results in a financial hardship. However the amount being deducted per pay date cannot be reduced below $10.00. In addition, Social Security will not reduce the AWG amount if the overpayment resulted from fraud, an intentional false statement or willful concealment of, or failure to furnish, material information.
