Once I fill out the SS-5 form and bring it in to a local office, will I get a new Social Security card immediately?

No. Local offices do not issue Social Security cards. All Social Security cards are issued centrally from Baltimore, Maryland.

However, the local office can give you a receipt to prove that you applied.

You can obtain information about the Field Office in your area on the Social Security Administration’s Internet Web site or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
