Are interpreter services provided by Social Security for people who want to apply for benefits but are unable to understand or speak English?
Yes. Interpreter services are provided free of charge by Social Security for anyone who prefers to receive service in a language other than English. Social Security has many bilingual employees available to provide service. When a bilingual employee is not available, all employees have access to a telephone interpreter service which provides interpreters by phone within 1 minute for over 150 languages and dialects.
To use the Social Security Administration’s interpreter services, call the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. If you speak Spanish, press 2. For all other languages, press 1 and stay on the line until a representative answers. An interpreter in your language will be contacted to help with your call. If your business cannot be completed by phone, Social Security will make an appointment for you at a local Social Security office and arrange for an interpreter to be available at the time of your visit.
